"When one day I resolved to practice a certain virtue, I lapsed into the vice opposed to that virtue ten times more frequently than on other days. In the evning, I was reflecting on why, today, I had lapsed extraordinariy, and I heard the words: YOU WERE COUNTING TOO MUCH ON YOURSELF AND TOO LITTLE ON ME. And I understoood the cause of my lapses." - St. Faustina, Notebook 3, Divine Mercy in My Soul

Filipino Apostle of the Divine Mercy

FILIPINO APOSTLE of the Divine Mercy
The Second Coming of Jesus is not an event to be feared, but a mystery to be anticipated in faith and hope because this is the final accomplishment of God’s plan for humankind. It is the time of our salvation.

A remarkable phenomenon of our time is the swift dissemination of the devotion to Jesus the Divine Mercy. God himself raises up apostles in some parts of the world, tasking them to spread this fitting worship. Among the chosen apostles is Brother Stanley Villavicencio, a married man from Mambaling, Cebu City. People call him now Bro. Stanley.

A brief look at the past

As many have already known, the story of the Divine Mercy devotion started with God’s call of Sr. Faustina Kowalska, a simple nun, from the convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Poland. Sr. Faustina lived a holy and difficult life, having to suffer poor health, dryness of spirit, temptations, misinterpretations of her intentions, harsh treatment, humiliations and the lack of recognition in everything in her community. All such sufferings were meritorious as she offered them in union with the sufferings of Jesus.

Sr. Faustina receive from Jesus the mission to proclaim to the world that the devotion to the Divine Mercy is a sign for the End Times, that His Second Coming is imminent and people must approach Him as a merciful Savior if they want to avoid meeting Him as a Judge.

In one of their conversations, Jesus said, “Speak about mercy to the world; let all mankind recognize my unfathomable mercy. It is a sign for the End Times. After it, the Day of Justice will come…Before I come as a Just Judge, I first open wide the doors of my mercy. He who refuse to pass through the doors of my mercy will have to pass through the doors of my Justice.” (1146)

Jesus appeared to Sr. Faustina with one arm raised in blessing and the other pointing to His Heart. Two rays emanate from Jesus’ Heart: the pale rays stand for water which makes the soul righteous and the red rays stand for the blood which is the life of the soul. Jesus told Sr. Faustina that these rays shield souls from the just wrath of the Father.

In another conversation, Jesus prophesied about the extraordinary "spark" that will rise up from Poland: "I have a special love for Poland, and if she will be obedient to my will, I will exalt her in might and holiness; for from her will come forth the spark that will prepare the world for my final coming" (93).

Although the Church has not made any pronouncement, many people believe that this prophecy was fulfilled in Pope John Paul II, who in his pontificate had done much writing, preaching and witnessing to bring the world back to God.

After the death of Sr. Faustina in 1938, Divine Mercy devotion spread out rapidly, becoming a solace especially during the second world war, but shortly after, it was banned for twenty years by the Church for inadequate translation of the reports from the Polish language.

When Cardinal Karol Wojtyla was archbishop of Krakow, Poland, he intervened and the ban was lifted. Six months after this, he was elected as Pope. He then facilitated the work for the beatification of Sr. Faustina and finally canonized her on April 30, 2000, the year of the Jubilee of Mercy. As desired by Jesus himself, the celebration of the Feast of Divine Mercy is on Sunday after Easter.

The Call of Stanley

Stanley was an employee of the AVSECOM (Aviation Security Command) in Mactan and a devout believer of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. In March 2, 1993, God called him to be a disciple in a very unique way. In the morning he was found trembling and vomiting blood forcefully. He was rushed to the hospital but the doctors who attended to him could do nothing. Eventually the doctors advised to remove all the life saving apparatuses attached to his body. The family however refused to heed the advice of the doctors considering that he belonged to a family of doctors and nurses.

While his body was lying at the ICU of the hospital, His soul was led to a light and he discovered he was in front of our Lord Jesus Christ. Here Jesus showed him the movie of his life on a giant screen from childhood up to the present. He said "Whenever I do good, it just goes on normally, but I noticed that everytime I commit a sin, it goes into a slow motion. However, when I commit a mortal sin, the pictures would stop and become enlarged right before my eyes that even if I close my eyes I could still see them. The movie was repeated three times. Jesus said "You go back now because you have still so many things to do. You have still so many things to finish. If I have a message for you I will just appear to you in your dreams."

When Stanley woke up, he felt that he was physically strong. He got up and took off all the gadgets attached to his body. The nurse who saw everything was so shocked that she ran away. When she returned, the doctors and technicians came running with her. They subjected him to a battery of tests the results of which turned out that he was not sick afterall. The doctors said 'there is nothing else that we can do because you are well. Have a mass offered for thanksgiving." His wife nurse who had been with him all throughout was dumbfounded. Many who knew about his previous condition were shocked. He went home driving his own car, beside his wife who was still in disbelief.

The Church started to investigate on this phenomenon. Their discovery led to the endorsement of Archbishop of Cebu, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

Brother Stanley's mission

Stanley's mission is a continuation of that of St. Faustina's. He is now tasked to go around the world to spread God's unfathomable mercy not only to the Catholics bus also to other denominations as well because Jesus told him "God's mercy is for everybody, regardless of faith, regardless of religion. He was also asked by Jesus to teach the world to trust in His mercy. Jesus told him, "Your faith is not enough if you don't trust because sins of distrust hurt me most."

Words of Jesus

One of the most timely messages Jesus told Bro. Stanley is "Now is the time of mercy. Now is the time for us to reconcile with the Lord. Now is the time for us to reconcile with our family. Now is the time for us to reconcile with everybody. Not tomorrow because Jesus said:Tomorrow never comes because when tomorrow comes, that is today. So why wait for tomorrow. We have to be ready now."

Jesus also sent important messages for the priests. He said "Please multiply your prayers for my beloved priests because they are my precious jewels although some of them cause my heart to bleed. But still I will bless them abundantly, in time and in eternity much more if they stay longer at the confessional because Jesus said "It is at the confessional that mercy flows greater than all the sins committed by any living creature." Here we realize how important the sacrament of confession is.

Other miracles

Stanley recalls that in one of his rounds in Europe, someone attempted to poison him. After his testimony a certain lady offered him a jug of coffee but when Stanley held it , the bottom of the jug gave way , spilling the coffee on the floor. A pet cat, belonging to another lady immediately jumped down and licked the coffee, but it suddenly trembled and died. The lady who offered the coffee cried but denied it came from her. She said it was just handed to her. The culprit was never discovered but it was clearly evident that the Lord was protecting Br. Stanley.

Feast of Divine Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday)

Jesus told Sr. Faustina " I desire that the Feast of the Divine Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, especially for poor sinners... The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the Divine floodgates through which grace flow are open..."

On April 30, 2000, Blessed Faustina Kowalska was canonized by Pope John Paul II in Rome on Divine Mercy Sunday during the Great Jubilee Year 2000. And the Pope states during his Canonization homily: "The Second Sunday of Easter from now on throughout the Church will be called Divine Mercy Sunday."

Novena to Jesus the Divine Mercy starts on Good Friday and ends on Saturday before Divine Mercy Sunday.

Intimacy with Jesus

In an interview lately, Stanley said that Jesus had already appeared to him 32 times through his dreams. He speaks to Stanley in English and sometimes in Visayan. His love radiates on the person of Stanley as he speaks. Jesus converse with Stanley in a very tender manner. He is always respectful, using even the word "please" when requesting for something. He shows appreciation for all that Stanley is doing for him. Jesus would often say "Thank you... I love you my son."

Living in God’s Mercy: Bro. Stanley Villavicencio’s unwavering faith and devotion

Living in God’s Mercy: Bro. Stanley Villavicencio’s unwavering faith and devotion

What would you do if one day the Lord showed you the movie of your life – successes, sins and sorrows -- and rewinds it three times for you to review? One would think that it would take more than a lifetime to watch it once, much less thrice. But for one person, it only took three days. For Bro. Stanley Villavicencio, it was an experience that further changed his life, devotion and faith in the Lord.

An ordinary man of extraordinary faith

Born in Bais, Negros Oriental, Bro. Stanley was raised a Roman Catholic and had a great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, a devotion he started when he was still in grade school.

He married Melissa Gantuangco Villar, a nurse, and moved to Cebu to start a family. Still, his devotion continued, as close to his house was a chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Having the chapel near his house had a great bearing on his decision, but after moving, he discovered that the chapel was portable. "Portable lang siya, pero meron nag-donate ng lote, kaya we were able to build a permanent chapel," he explained. In 1983, he became Chapel President.

Bro. Stanley was basically and ordinary man. In 1993, he was an employee of AVSECOM (The Aviation Security Command). He also became a member of the Perpetual Dawn Rosary Association in Cebu.

A miracle and a calling

In 1993, as head of the family, Bro. Stanley was suppose to receive the statue of the Virgin Mary into their home. However, that morning when the statue arrived, he was not up and so his mother-in-law received it. Concerned, she went inside the bedroom, there she found him convulsing, with blood spurting from his mouth.

Bro. Stanley was taken to Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu and was rushed to the Emergency Room. There, still bleeding profusely from his mouth, and convulsing, he was injected with the maximum dose of Valium to try to stop the convulsions and slow down the huge quantity of blood pouring from his mouth. The doctors ran all sorts of tests, but could not locate the source of the bleeding, nor any kind of illness. "Wala akong sakit noon," he said and added, "but I was pronounced clinically dead by the doctors."

Doctors took a blood test with view of giving him a blood transfusion, but his blood count was normal which medically was impossible, it meant that his body was not short of blood, despite the fact he had lost so much blood. He slipped into a coma, is heartbeat became slower, his skin color turned gray and then he stopped breathing.

He was declared "brain dead." His family at first did not believe because Bro. Stanley had shown no previous signs of being ill and the doctors were unable to determine what was wrong. But on the second day, his family prepared for his funeral -- his coffin, a burial plot, and a burial gown were all arranged. By the third day Stanley’s blood had congealed in the bottom of his legs and feet and rigor mortis begun to set in.

But after the third day, Bro. Stanley came back from the dead, perfectly healthy, as if nothing had happened. While his heart was flat line, his brain dead, he had in spirit, met for the first time "Jesus Christ of the Divine Mercy."

Every sequence and procedure of his medical condition was documented. Medical records showed that he was first in a coma and then dead. On investigation these records were examined and all medical staff involved, questioned. The Church started to investigate on this phenomenon and their discovery led to the endorsement of the Archbishop of Cebu, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

A message of repentance, faith and mercy

"Ang Diyos hindi Niya tinitignan kung gaano kalaki ang kasalanan mo, kung gaano karami or kung gaano kaitim ang budhi mo. Lahat napapatawad ng Diyos."

Bro. Stanley said in an interview with the Asian Journal.

Such is the message given to Bro. Stanley by the Lord. Today, he is on a mission to go around the world to spread God’s unfathomable mercy not only to Catholics but also to other denominations. "God’s mercy is for everybody, regardless of faith or religion," Bro. Stanley said.

Bro. Stanley has been traveling around the world for 15 years now, evangelizing the God’s word. "I have given 6,478 talks all over the world," he said, "I am there to share what happened to me. That is the work of the Holy Spirit."

But of course, he knows – and has encountered – non-believers and skeptics.

"Hindi naman maiiwasan yan.

Persecution makes us mature," he said and explained, "If it’s for the Lord, maraming mag-oppose."

Still, there are many who embrace their faith and accept God’s mercy. Bro. Stanley relates one story about being touched by the Lord’s grace, "There was one woman who attended my talk and approached me. She told me, ‘I’m a Baptist, and I was suppose to have an abortion. But after hearing your talked, I changed my mind – because I do not want the Lord to show me the film of my life showing that I killed my own child.’"

The film the woman was referring to was the same as what the Lord showed Bro. Stanley in 1993. "Pinakita sa akin ang pelikula ng aking buhay, from childhood to the present – may review and rewind pa, three times," Bro. Stanley said and added, "Seeing the film of my life, ngayon, kahit nakapikit, I’m so afraid to commit a sin."

What is the Divine Mercy?

The story of the Divine Mercy devotion started with God’s call of Sr. Faustina Kowalska, a simple nun, front eh convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Poland. Living a holy and difficult life, Sr. Faustina offered all of these in union with the sufferings of Jesus. She then received from Jesus the mission to proclaim to the world that the devotion to the Divince Mercy is a sign for End Times, the Second Coming, and that people must approach Him as a merciful Savior if they want to avoid meeting him as a Judge.

This is the same message that Jesus has given Bro. Stanley. "Before I come as a just judge, I will open wide the doors of mercy. He who refuses to pass the doors of mercy, will have to pass through the doors of My justice."

In closing, Bro. Stanley sent out one of the most timely messages given to him by Jesus, "Now is the time of mercy. Now is the time for us to reconcile with the Lord. Now is the time to reconcile with our family. Now is the time to reconcile with everybody. Not tomorrow, because tomorrow never comes because when tomorrow comes, that is today. So why wait for tomorrow? We have to be ready now." (www.asianjournal.com)

Life After Death Experience by Fr. Jose Maniyangat

I was born on July 16, 1949 in Kerala, India to my parents, Joseph and Theresa Maniyangat. I am the eldest of seven children: Jose, Mary, Theresa, Lissama, Zachariah, Valsa and Tom.

At the age of fourteen, I entered St. Mary’s minor seminary in Thiruvalla to begin my studies for the priesthood. Four years later I went to St. Joseph’s Pontifical Major Seminary in Alwaye, Kerala to continue my priestly formation. After completing the seven years of Philosophy and Theology I was ordained a priest on January 1, 1975 to serve as a missionary at the Diocese of Thiruvalla.

In 1978 while teaching at the St. Thomas minor seminary in Bathery, I became an active member of the Charismatic Renewal movement and began conducting charismatic retreats and conferences in Kerala.

On Sunday April 14, 1985, the Feast of the Divine Mercy, I was going to celebrate Mass at a mission church in the north part of Kerala, and I had a fatal accident. I was riding a motorcycle when I was hit head-on by a jeep driven by a man who was intoxicated after a Hindu festival. I was rushed to a hospital about 35 miles away. On the way my soul came out from my body and I experienced death. Immediately I met my Guardian angel. I saw my body and the people who were carrying me to the hospital. I heard them crying and praying for me. At this time my angel told me: “I am going to take you to Heaven, the Lord wants to meet you and talk with you”. He also said that on the way he wanted to show me hell and purgatory.

First, the angel escorted me to hell. It was an awful sight! I saw Satan and the devils, an unquenchable fire of about 2,000 Fahrenheit degrees, worms crawling, people screaming and fighting, others being tortured by demons. The angel told me that all these sufferings were due to unrepented mortal sins. Then, I understood that there are seven degrees of suffering or levels according to the number and kinds of mortal sins committed in their earthly lives. The souls looked very ugly, cruel and horrific. It was a fearful experience. I saw people whom I knew but I am not allowed to reveal their identities. The sins that convicted them were mainly abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, hatefulness, unforgiveness and sacrilege. The angel told me that if they had repented they would have avoided hell and gone instead to purgatory. I also understood that some people who repent from these sins might be purified on earth through their sufferings. This way they can avoid purgatory and go straight to heaven.

I was surprised when I saw in hell even Priests and Bishops, some of whom I never expected to see. Many of them were there because they had misled the people with false teaching and bad example.

After the visit to hell, my Guardian angel escorted me to Purgatory. Here too, there are seven degrees of suffering and unquenchable fire. But it is far less intense than hell and there was neither quarreling nor fighting. The main suffering of these souls is their separation from God. Some of those who are in Purgatory committed numerous mortal sins; but they were reconciled with God before their death. Even though these souls are suffering, they enjoy peace and the knowledge that one day they will see God face to face.

I had a chance to communicate with the souls in Purgatory. They asked me to pray for them and to tell the people to pray for them as well, so they can go to heaven quickly. When we pray for these souls we will receive their gratitude through their prayers and once they enter heaven their prayers become even more meritorious.

It is difficult for me to describe how beautiful my Guardian angel is. He is radiant and bright. He is my constant companion and helps me in all my ministries, especially my healing ministry. I experience his presence everywhere I go and I am grateful for his protection in my daily life.

Next, my angel escorted me to heaven passing through a big dazzling white tunnel. I never experienced this much peace and joy in my life. Then immediately the heaven opened up and I heard the most delightful music, which I never heard before. The angels were singing and praising God. I saw all the saints, especially the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph, and many dedicated holy Bishops and Priests who were shining like stars. And when I appeared before the Lord, Jesus told me: “I want you to go back to the world. In your second life you will be an instrument of peace and healing to my people. You will walk in a foreign land and you will speak in a foreign tongue. Everything is possible for you with my grace”. After these words, the Blessed Mother told me: “Do whatever He tells you. I will help you in your ministries”.

Words can not express the beauty of heaven. There we find so much peace and happiness, which exceed a million times our imagination. Our Lord is far more beautiful than any image can convey. His face is radiant and luminous and more beautiful than a thousand rising suns. The pictures we see in the world are only a shadow of His magnificence. The Blessed Mother was next to Jesus; she was so beautiful and radiant. None of the images we see in this world can compare with her real beauty. Heaven is our real home, we are all created to reach heaven and enjoy God forever. Then, I came back to the world with my angel.

While my body was at the hospital, the doctor completed all examinations and I was pronounced dead. The cause of death was bleeding. My family was notified and since they were far away, the hospital staff decided to move my dead body to the morgue. Because the hospital did not have air conditioners they were concerned that the body would decompose quickly. As they were moving my dead body to the morgue, my soul came back to the body. I felt an excruciating pain because of so many wounds and broken bones. I began to scream and then the people became frightened and ran away screaming. One of them approached the doctor and said: “the dead body is screaming”. The doctor came to examine the body and found that I was alive. So he said: “Father is alive, it is a miracle, take him back to the hospital”.

Now, back at the hospital, they gave me blood transfusions and I was taken to surgery to repair the broken bones. They worked on my lower jaw, ribs, pelvic bone, wrists, and right leg. After two months, I was released from the hospital, but my orthopedic doctor said that I would never walk again. I then said to him: “ the Lord who gave me my life back and sent me back to the world will heal me”. Once at home we were all praying for a miracle. Still after a month and with the casts removed I was not able to move. But one day while praying I felt an extraordinary pain in my pelvic area. After a short while the pain disappeared completely and I heard a voice saying: “You are healed. Get up and walk”. I felt the peace and healing power on my body. I immediately got up and walked. I praised and thanked God for the miracle.

I reached my doctor with the news of my healing and he was amazed. He said: “your God is the true God. I must follow your God”. The doctor was Hindu and he asked me to teach him about our Church. After studying the faith, I baptized him and he became Catholic.

Following the message from my Guardian angel, I came to the United States on November 10, 1986 as a missionary Priest. First, I worked in the Diocese of Boise, Idaho from 1987 to 1989 and then became the Director of Prison Ministry in the Diocese of Orlando, Florida from 1989 to 1992.

In 1992, I came to the Diocese of St. Augustine where I was first assigned to St. Matthew's Parish in Jacksonville for two years. I was then appointed Parochial Vicar of Assumption Church from 1994 to 1999. In 1997 I was incardinated as a permanent member of the Diocese. Since June 1999, I have been pastor of St. Mary's Mother of Mercy Catholic Church in Macclenny, Florida. I also serve as the Catholic Chaplain for Florida State Prison in Starke, Union Correctional Institution in Raiford and Northeast Florida State Hospital in Macclenny. I am also the Diocesan Spiritual Director of the Legion of Mary.

On the first Saturday of each month I conduct a Eucharistic and charismatic-healing ministry in my Parish, St. Mary Mother of Mercy. People come from all over the diocese, many parts of Florida and even from out of the state. I have been invited to conduct the healing ministry in other major cities of the United States including: New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, San Jose, Dallas, Chicago, Birmingham, Denver, Boise, Idaho Falls, Hawaii, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Poolsville; and many other countries: Ireland, Spain, Czech Republic, India, France, Portugal, Yugoslavia, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Cayman Island, and Ontario.

Through this Eucharistic-healing ministry I have seen many people healed physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally. People with various illnesses such as: cancer, AIDs, arthritis, heart conditions, eye problems, emphysema, asthma, back pains, bad hearing and many others have been healed completely. In addition, several times during the year I conduct a special healing service for the healing of the family tree, in which the effects from ancestral sins are blocked and the person receives complete healing. Scripture says that the effects from family sins can linger around for three to five generations (Exodus Chapter 34 verse 7). So, in many cases we need generational healing. Doctors and medicines do not help to heal certain sicknesses caused by our family tree.

During the Healing ministry, many people rest in the spirit before the Blessed Sacrament and some experience renewal of the soul and healing of the body.
